Women, Race, & Class Questions + Sign-Up's
Hello everyone,
I hope this letter finds you well in times of great chaos and uncertainty. We are truly looking forward to convening with you this week if you are able to make it!
We will be discussing Dr. Angela Davis’ Women, Race, & Class tomorrow, Sunday, October 4th at 10am PT (11am MT, 12pm CT, 1pm ET) and on Thursday, October 7th at 7pm ET (6pm CT, 5pm MT, 4pm PT). As always, if you weren’t able to finish the book in time you are still welcome to partake, but we truly recommend reading this one to all!!
The following questions will help guide our conversations this week:
How does this book position the concept of intersectionality in a historical context for you?
How much of the content here was new to you? Why do you think it’s not widely taught?
In what ways do the historical themes explored still show up in our modern world? (i.e. white womanhood’s narrow mindedness, racist narratives around birth control, myths about the black body, etc.)
Which of the myths discussed had been a part of your narrative of the world, how ever subtly? (i.e. perceptions of why abortion access is necessary)
Where have you individually and movements more broadly been blind to the trifecta of interlocking classism, racism, and sexism? How do we root this out of our present and future organizing/activism/advocacy?
Two of the chapters in the book are dedicated respectively to lynching and birth control, the latter with heavy emphasis on the topic of forced sterilization. In 2020 these are still very salient issues. How do we as informed readers better tackle these problems now that we know more about their historical legacies?
What lessons can we take from the failures and successes, particularly in movement organizing, that Dr. Davis discusses?
This book is phenomenal, but very dense, and we hope this space can help us all work through the very necessary process of learning and unlearning it has taken us on.
Thank you all for your continued support, solidarity, and action.
